Beyond heatmaps

Hotjar alternative for fixing SaaS signup drop-off

Heatmaps and recordings tell you where people leave. They don't tell you why, or what to change first. FlowAudit returns the fix list.

No credit card required.

Session recording and heatmap tools are good at their job. They show you that 38% of visitors abandon on step two, that nobody scrolls past the fold, that a rage click clusters on a non-clickable label. That's real signal, and it's worth having.

But it's diagnosis by symptom. You still have to interpret it, form a hypothesis, and decide which change to ship — and that interpretation step is where small teams stall. Worse, the data only arrives once you've had enough traffic to make it meaningful, which is exactly the thing an early flow doesn't have.

FlowAudit works from the other end. It reviews the flow itself against conversion heuristics and returns causes and fixes, ranked. Run it alongside your analytics: one tells you where the leak is, the other tells you what to patch.

When hiring is still the right call

We'd rather you spend the money well than spend it with us. These are the cases where a human beats an automated review, plainly.

You need behavioural data, not a review

If the question is 'how many people drop at step two', that's an analytics question. Keep your heatmap tool — a heuristic review can't count your users.

You're running A/B tests at volume

Experimentation platforms measure what actually won. FlowAudit is upstream of that: it tells you which variants are worth testing.

You need original user research

Moderated interviews, usability testing with real participants, and diary studies tell you things no heuristic review can. If the question is 'what do our users actually believe', hire someone.

You're planning a multi-quarter redesign

A full IA rework, a design system, or a rebrand is a project, not a fix list. An agency earns its fee when the scope is that big.

What you get instead of a report

  • A ranked P0/P1/P2 backlog — what to fix first, and what can wait until it's cheap.
  • Rewritten copy for headlines, CTAs, and microcopy wherever wording is the failure.
  • A re-run on the same flow after you ship, so you can compare before and after without booking anything.

Two real reports, nothing redacted:

What FlowAudit checks on a signup flow

The full model, including how severity is assigned, is published on our methodology page.

  • Form field minimalism and total friction to create an account
  • Value reinforcement next to the form, not just on the page before it
  • Trust signals and social proof at the point of signup
  • Error handling, validation timing, and recovery paths
  • Social auth placement versus email/password expectations
  • Email verification and what the user sees while they wait
  • Whether the first screen after signup makes the next action obvious
  • Mobile keyboard, autofill, and tap-target behaviour on the form

Run one flow through FlowAudit first. If the backlog it hands you is enough to act on, you just saved a couple of weeks and a few thousand dollars. If it isn't, you know what to brief the agency on.
