The 'No Data Yet' Screen Is Your Onboarding Flow: A P0/P1/P2 Audit for SaaS

The 'No Data Yet' Screen Is Your Onboarding Flow: A P0/P1/P2 Audit for SaaS

Why the Empty State Is a Conversion Moment

After the signup button, the empty state is the first page you control. In most SaaS apps it's a blank dashboard with a 'No projects' message and a disabled CTA. That's not neutral — it's a leak.

Users just gave you their email. They're curious but not convinced. They need a reason to stay before they've created anything. The empty state either starts the activation loop or kills it.

Heuristic Checklist for a High-Converting Empty State

Clarity: Does this screen explain what the product does? If you need a separate tour, your empty state failed.

Hierarchy: One primary action, not five buttons. If 'Create project' and 'Import data' are equally prominent, users don't move.

Guidance: Show the exact next step a user should take. Don't assume they know.

Friction: Can they complete the first action without filling out a form or reading docs? If yes, good.

Trust: Does the empty state feel professional? Does it reference the user's goal, not your product?

Feedback: What happens after they click the primary action? Does it confirm their choice and move them forward?

Go through each of these on your own empty state. Most teams miss at least two, usually clarity and guidance.

P0/P1/P2 Fixes for Your Empty State

  • P0: Replace the blank message with a sentence that states the user's goal and a single primary button. If you're not sure which P0 to fix first, run a free audit on your signup flow at FlowAudit to see the exact screen where users stall.
  • P1: Add contextual guidance: a first-step checklist, a sample project, or a 'try with demo data' option. Make the first hour feel productive even if the user has no data yet.
  • P2: Polish the microcopy, add a subtle animation, and include a secondary link to docs or a short video. Don't spend time on P2 until P0 and P1 are done.

Before/After Copy Rewrite

Before:

No projects yet.

[Create Project] [Import Project]

Two equally weighted actions, no context, no value.

After:

Set up your first project in under two minutes.

[Create Project] → [Watch a 90-second demo]

Now the primary action is clear, the time commitment is set, and the secondary action supports the user who isn't ready to click.

The 30-Minute Empty State Playbook

  1. Open your live app with a fresh user session and record your own screen.
  2. Watch the recording as a stranger. What do you do when you see the empty state?
  3. Pick the P0 fix from the list above. Change the copy and button hierarchy.
  4. Deploy it. Run for 48 hours.
  5. Compare activation rate (users who create their first project) before and after.

Don't touch your pricing or your homepage until this is solved. This is the front line of your onboarding.

Your Next Move

You'll only know if your empty state is the weak link if you test it. But you can shorten that cycle: start a free FlowAudit at /signup and get a prioritized P0/P1/P2 list for your signup and onboarding flow in minutes, not weeks.
